#7 Celebrating Trans+ History Week: Why It’s Important to Acknowledge and Learn
Share
Trans+ History Week isn’t just a date in the calendar - it’s a vital opportunity to reflect, honour, and educate. For so many of us in the trans and non-binary community, history hasn’t always included our voices. But we’ve always been here. And we always will be.
At Casual Reign, we believe that acknowledging and learning from our history is one of the most powerful things we can do - not just for ourselves, but for future generations.
Why Trans+ History Matters
Trans+ people have existed throughout history across cultures, continents, and eras. From gender-diverse identities in pre-colonial societies to figures like Roberta Cowell - the first known British trans woman to undergo gender-affirming surgery - our presence is undeniable, even if often erased.
Recognising trans+ history challenges the myth that being transgender or non-binary is a recent phenomenon. Our stories have always been part of the human story. They’ve just rarely been told.
Learning as Resistance
In today’s political climate - where trans rights are debated in the media and where misinformation spreads fast - learning is a form of resistance. By acknowledging Trans+ History Week, we affirm:
-
We were here.
-
We are here.
-
We will continue to be here.
When we educate ourselves and others, we help break down harmful myths, build compassion, and create safer environments for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community.
How You Can Honour Trans+ History Week in the UK
This week is for everyone - trans people, allies, and those still figuring things out. Here are ways you can actively engage:
-
Read and share stories by UK-based trans+ voices (like the work of Travis Alabanza, Shon Faye, or CN Lester).
-
Support trans-led organisations, like Gendered Intelligence, Mermaids UK, and Stonewall.
-
Download free resources, like Casual Reign: My Gender Journal, our digital guided journal created to support anyone exploring their gender identity.
-
Talk about what you learn - with friends, family, online, or even in your workplace.
It’s about awareness, visibility, and compassion.
Why It Matters to Us at Casual Reign
At Casual Reign, our mission goes beyond clothing. We exist to provide comfort, confidence, and kindness - because we know how powerful it is to feel seen and supported. Trans+ History Week means a lot to us, because it’s a reminder of our roots, our resilience, and our right to take up space.
We created Casual Reign: My Gender Journal to give people the chance to connect with themselves - just like we wish we’d had during our own journeys.
Let’s Make History - Together
Whether you're trans, non-binary, questioning, or an ally - thank you for showing up. Thank you for learning. And thank you for choosing to be part of something bigger.
Trans+ History Week is a time to celebrate. To honour. To reflect. But most of all, it’s a chance to build a future where trans people can thrive - unapologetically and visibly.
